Malaise traps
They're kind of expensive. Raccoons get in and then can't seem to turn around and walk out so they tear and rip their way out. (but a friend found iron on netting that works pretty well to repair them)
I have mixed emotions about the traps as well. You'll see insects you've never seen before in your whole life, but you don't get much ecological information other than they were flying or walking through the area. The traps catch and kill LOTS of insects, more than I can actually get through if I live 3 lifetimes (and I got a really late start on this first one).
