Red Beetle - Auletobius nasalis

Red Beetle - Auletobius nasalis
Above Las Vegas Wash, between Lake LV and Northshore Rd, Clark County, Nevada, USA
April 6, 2011
Size: Approx 10 mm
This small beetle was snacking on a Yellow Cup plant near the Las Vegas Wash.

Moved from Auletobius.

Further study of the matter made sure it is.

likely A. nasalis
which is variable in colour (reddish with scutellar macula, to black, according to Legalov (2001)

Moved from Auletobius humeralis.

In original description of Rhynchites humeralis Boheman, 1859, it is stated to have seriate punctures on elytra, including scutellar row. This seems not to be the case here.

Legalov (2011) has transferred humeralis to Rhynchitobius Sharp, 1889, together with A. cassandrae, and all species known from Central America.
We may expect the antennae closer to rostral base, as in A. cassandrae.

Auletobius probably humeralis Boheman This fits except for the size estimate. None of this species group are 10mm even with rostral length included. Mine do not exceed 5 mm.

awesome -- thanks a lot, Charlie
