Size: ~15 mm body length
Found on Carpenteria californica, seemed to have just emerged from its pupa.

Cephenemyia apicata
Natalie,
The side shot of this one helps in ID. A broad band across the back, with an abdomen with dark orange band, followed by black band, with light hairs on rump combined with your location put this as C. apicata. The broad distance between the eyes in your face shot hints that this is likely female.
