Beetle Mite - Poecilochirus

Beetle Mite - Poecilochirus
Harvard, Worcester County, Massachusetts, USA
May 5, 2006
Size: 1mm
This is a mite that was on a Scooped Scarab.

Moved
Moved from Mites.

Good Image, Tom.
What I wonder is, do all mites have a ticket to ride all beetles? If not, how many mite species ride beetles, and are they all in the same mite family? Do any mites ride only certain beetle species? We know that dung and carrion beetle mites eat fly eggs and larvae. What motivates mites to ride beetle species that visit neither dung nor carrion?

What
about bees?

Bees ride beetles?
Just kidding! Yes, and any other animals mites use as transportation.

Good question
Maybe you can get a grant to study this relationship. :-)
