Blister Beetle - Lytta aenea

Blister Beetle - Lytta aenea
Chester County, Pennsylvania, USA
April 26, 2011
Size: approx 20-25mm
Originally submitted as: Bee, Wasp, ??
Found on the floor of a wooded trail in southeastern PA. It was rotating in a circular pattern on a dead leaf, with its head moving laterally and the tip of its abdomen almost stationary. From time to time it would change position slightly, and then resume the same pattern of movement. Might somebody know what this behavior indicates?

re: observed behavior
Dr Pinto's input: "I recall similar behavior in stressed or wounded meloids. Have no idea as to significance."

re: Dr Pinto's input
