Ladybug and pupa (was: Mystery Caterpillar) - Coccinella septempunctata

Ladybug and pupa (was: Mystery Caterpillar) - Coccinella septempunctata
Asheboro, Randolph County, North Carolina, USA
May 6, 2006
Size: 1/2"
It looks like you were correct! I checked this morning and the pupa had remained unchanged from last weekend. This evening, however, I went back outside and saw that the ladybug had emerged. It's a beautiful shade of yellow, and very shiny.

suggest this can be safely moved to species

Harmonia axyridis
I went back this morning to check, and it had turned dark orange overnight. Also, it hadn't moved at all--it must be very exhausting to "burst forth". I'll try to post an additional picture later today.

C. septempunctata
looks more like C. septempunctata to me. note the elytra spot locations and pale area on the pronotum, not fully colored but still visible in your image.

Moved to Ladybird Beetles
- I'm pretty sure this is Harmonia axyridis but without an overhead shot of the thoracic shield (behind the head), I can't be positive. It probably turned red later on - it takes a while for fresh hatchlings to develop their color. Did you happen to go back to see? Or take a shot from another angle?
