Pipevine Swallowtail - Battus philenor - female

Pipevine Swallowtail - Battus philenor - Female
Austin, Travis County, Texas, USA
April 18, 2011
Laying eggs on blades of grass near the site where I saw about 20 large Pipevine Swallowtail caterpillars earlier in the spring. And more recently I saw about a hundred small caterpillars feeding on a sunflower plant.

Interesting behavior!
I wonder, are the broader leaves just below here some sort of Pipe Vine? As far as knew, this species wasn't inclined to lay near the food plant, but actually on it.

As for the caterpillars on the Sunflower, they probably weren't this species. More likely they were a species of Chlosyne, with C. lacinia being a strong likelihood.

Moved from Butterflies (excluding skippers).
