Moved from Periodical Cicadas. Presuming these are all the same species, the adults do indeed look like M. tredecassini.

underside abdomen?
As far as I understand, it is very helpful to see the underside of the abdomen, though that "orange behind the eye" helps, too. (Experts correct me if there is something else.) At a couple of suburban sites in Durham, I've been seeing ones with mostly orange abdomens and orange behind the eye, body length about 28 mm--I believe them to be M. tredecim:

At Penny's Bend, along the Eno, but not in the park, I've seen an emergence of smaller cicadas with almost completely dark abdomens and no, or only a hint, of orange behind the eye. These are smaller, with body lengths of about 24 mm. I'm pretty sure these are M. tredecassini:

Drop me an e-mail if you are going to be around Durham for a while!

Can't rule out tredecula from
Can't rule out tredecula from the evidence provided. Need a shot of the underside to rule it out.

Didn't even think to shoot the ventral surface
from your description, I'd say M. tredecassini. I was there for a night only, before heading home - will keep you in mind next time I'm up that way.
