This is in a Coastal Prairie, vegetation here is usually less then 12 inches tall.
This particular Coastal Prairie has one of the highest bio diversity's around.

Flower fly -
Family Syrphidae, and a male (eyes holoptic - more or less touching on top); genus Platycheirus I dare say.

Thanks Ron and Hartmut. I'm still taking photos of insects, lots of them but haven't had a chance to process and submit anything in the last year. The projects that took over will be winding down by this fall and I'll submit a lot more stuff.

Glad to know you're still out there hunting. I've pretty much quit shooting with the camera but continue to shoot off my mouth! I'll look forward to your syrphid shots in particular.

I've a few nice ones not sumbitted, but I doubt I've got any new species, though not everything was taken to species before.

I believe it is Dr Asher I need to get more prodabrus (sp? in the soldier beetle family?) shots to,I think I found another variation.

 
I don't know who does beetles. V. Belov is a good entry point.
Dr. Asher is bees.
