Ant 2011.05.07.2413 - Solenopsis xyloni

Ant 2011.05.07.2413 - Solenopsis xyloni
Moccasin Lake, Winston, Douglas County, Georgia, USA
May 7, 2011
Size: est. 3 - 4 mm
While busily photographing a dragonfly, I inadvertently disturbed a small nest of these ants. I did not notice them until they started biting/stinging me on my hand and wrist. Nest was in moist sand next to a stream in open sun. Larva were exposed very near surface. Would like help with ID if at all possible. Unsure if second specimen is of same species, but was in among other ants in this nest.

Good catch, Jody
Well golly jee! I haven't seen a fresh specimen of the dark, eastern version of this species in 30+ years, and thought perhaps it had been completely extinguished by the invasive S. invicta.
(Minor workers of the latter are typically at least a little bit redder anteriorly, not all dark brown like this one.)

Solenopsis sp., perhaps xylon
Solenopsis sp., perhaps xyloni...
