Dermacentor variabilis - female

Dermacentor variabilis - Female
Henderson County, North Carolina, USA
May 8, 2011

Moved
Dermacentor variabilis is the only Dermacentor in my area. Moved from Dermacentor.

D. albipictus
D. albipictus is found in North Carolina, probably anywhere you can find deer. It's not likely to be found unattached at this time of year, though.

It was found on me
D. albipictus almost never chooses humans as a host.

Moved
Moved from ID Request.

Female Dermacentor, probably
Female Dermacentor, probably D. variabilis based on locality.

Can't say for sure on species, but I think it's a Female

I think male
The shell of (most?) male hard ticks covers the entire body, of females covers only part of the body.

female
this definately a female. The dorsal shield (predominately white area) covers only part of the dorsum.

The genus is correct, as the species ID most-likely is correct, but examination of the spiracular plate would be needed to be sure.
