definations

As an amateur contributor, I have a really hard time with definitions. A reference online would be of great assistance. I will be seeing these this flower a lot in the coming months, and if I knew what arista and plumose meant (they are not in my insect books) I'd be able to get better photos for the guide.

This character is found on and off throughout Diptera and Syrphidae and here is used to separate the genera Cheilosia and Hiatomyia.

Bare or very hairy nose hair

Thanks Kevin, Martin Hauser also sent me a very nice diagram of a bare and 'plumose' or feathery hairy nose hair on these flies.

I noted all of mine are in Cow Parsnip, and the photos submitted are on the coast of the SantaCruz San Mateo County line.

I'm a few years behind in submissions (but still taking photos, though the drought wiped out 60% of the insects, or more, in this area) but I'll try to look for more of these soon.
