little golden jumper - Beata wickhami - female

little golden jumper - Beata wickhami - Female
Pinellas County, Florida, USA
February 9, 2009
Size: 3 mm
Identified by GB Edwards. This species will be reassigned to genus Hentzia in a future revision. Besides being found in Cuba, wickhami is now known from only four coastal counties (Monroe, Dade, St. Lucie, and Pinellas) in FL, but is probably breeding in all counties along both coasts of southern and central FL. Its very small size makes it very easy to overlook.

Nice
images.

I found this species the same month and year in Boca Raton, and just sent GB images today for an ID!

That's great, Jeff. It's now documented for five counties in FL. As I stated previously, it probably occurs in all the southern and central counties along both FL coasts. The one in your images appears to have lost most of the scales on the dorsal abdomen. I've noticed that the ones I find seem to lose scales on the carapace, but I haven't noticed any with obvious scales missing on the dorsal abdomen.

Actually
it is also possible the appearance of scale loss is due to noise reduction. Mine aren't very good images and they were even worse before I cleaned them up. It was long ago but I think it could have been a nicely colored specimen, but you may very well be correct. It is just hard for me to tell.

Nice to have more records, and it was found in an urban area, E. Palmetto Park and SE 3rd Ave. Palmetto Park is usually high traffic.

Wonderful . . .

Thanks, Dick. I've also had fun taking videos of various wickhami as they construct their shelters, hunt for and eat flies, and go about their other daily activities.

Thanks, Lynette. I've added images of a male here . Considering how different from other North American Hentzia the male and female wickhami appear to be, it's hard to believe this species is actually a Hentzia. But, I guess, the genitalia don't lie!
