I stumbled upon an individual emerging and decided to get a series of photos recording it. It was already halfway out when I found it, so unfortunately, no photos of the first split.

It's pretty cool that you even show how the coloration changes as the shell hardens. You must be very patient.

It was a great find. We had literally tens of thousands in our woods and the woods around us, and I would find them in all various stages, but this was one of the few I caught just emerging and allowing for a good photo series.

 
so lucky
to have experienced this, I only found one that had just emerged, never saw such a small cicada, they are really neat.. wish I had seen it when it turned black, but when I went back it was gone..
