Fake ant! - Beata wickhami - male

Fake ant! - Beata wickhami - Male
Pinellas County, Florida, USA
August 23, 2008
Size: 2.5 mm
Although females and immature wickhami seem be active most of the year in my yard and in a nearby park, this was one of only two adult males I've found since I first found this species several years ago. The males behave more like ants than even the females, waving their forelegs almost continually--much like an ant with its antennae. I had to wait until this male moved out from the dark areas between the leaves, before I could be sure he wasn't one of the small species of Camponotus which forages in the same Ligustrum hedge.
