Malachius mixtus? - Malachius mixtus - Male
South Valley Ecological Reserve, east of Mt Hamilton, Santa Clara County, California, USA

Perched on inflorescence of the native herb Lomatium nudicaule, in the Carrot Family, Apiaceae. Found in mixed oak woodland/grassland habitat of the semi-arid south Inner Coast Range. There were many individuals and mating pairs of this type on a variety of flowers at this locale and time, see:

I think this is a male of the same species Joyce posted here. It was found in the same bioregion, about 40 miles south.
