Perched on inflorescence of the native herb Lomatium nudicaule, in the Carrot Family, Apiaceae. Found in mixed oak woodland/grassland habitat of the semi-arid south Inner Coast Range. There were many individuals and mating pairs of this type on a variety of flowers at this locale and time, see:

I think this is a male of the same species Joyce posted here. It was found in the same bioregion, about 40 miles south.
