This is Panorpa floridana, a
This is Panorpa floridana, a scorpionfly endemic to northeastern Florida. This insect is unique in the manner that it holds its wings over its back and has speckled wings with glossy membranes. At the moment this is the rarest scorpionfly in North America and the only photographs of a live specimen that I am aware. I had written this insect off as extinct due to developement. A very nice photo indeed!

P.S. calculating from the photo, I believe the length of the insect was 15 mm from the front of the eyes to the tip of the wings.
