Sphacophilus apios (dark form, atrescens), male genitalia - Sphacophilus apios - male

Sphacophilus apios (dark form, atrescens), male genitalia - Sphacophilus apios - Male
1 mile west of Charleston, Coles County, Illinois, USA
May 13, 2011
Size: Adult length 5.5mm
This image shows male genital structures of the same individual adult Sphacophilus sawfly, reared from Orbexilum onobrychis (Fabaceae), that is shown in the linked image. Shown here are the harpe (left-hand panel) and penis valve (right-hand panel), in the same orientation in which they are presented in the excellent revision by Smith 1971, Transactions of the American Entomological Society 97: 537-594. According to the information in the revision, certainly the closest match on basis of male genital morphology is S. apios (Smith's Figs. 95 and 96), which has been reared in Illinois from Desmodium canadense (Fabaceae) and collected as pupae on Psoralidium tenuiflorum (formerly Psoralea tenuiflora) (Fabaceae).
