Maple Gall Mite (Vasates Quadripedes) - Vasates quadripedes

Maple Gall Mite (Vasates Quadripedes) - Vasates quadripedes
Belle River/ In the back yard on a Sugar Maple (Hard Maple), Essex, Ontario, Canada
May 10, 2006
Size: 1-3mm
It seems they anchor on the leaves on the inner part of the braches for protection from other insects, perhaps even from the sun. Notice how the mites are all near the veins of the leaf.

I don't know if there are other possibilities, but if you are reasonably confident of the ID these can be moved to where we have another image on this site here. No problem, Did the owner ever get back to you about cropping that image? It's huge!

Not so much the size
it was the out of focus foreground that was bothering me. I've cropped it to show the sharply focussed galls that were in the background more clearly.
