Wasp Galls - Diplolepis polita

Wasp Galls - Diplolepis polita
Davis, Yolo County, California, USA
May 5, 2011
Size: 8-10mm diameter
I'm pretty sure this is in the genus Diplolepis, but none of the images here at bugguide look quite the same (the spines are much shorter on the specimens I found). Out of the options here, I'm leaning toward D. polita, but I'd appreciate any confirmations or info. The galls were on a rose leaf if that helps. Thanks, Tim

Diplolepis polita
D. polita is a leaf gall (dorsal surface of leaves, like yours), whereas D. bicolor is a stem gall.

Thanks
for your help Joyce! It's good to know that simple tip to distinguish the two species.

According to Russo's Plant Galls of California, it might be D. bicolor, which is very similar to polita... awesome gall
