Soldier Beetles (Cantharidae)? - Podabrus edmundsae

Soldier Beetles (Cantharidae)? - Podabrus edmundsae
Henry Cowell RSP Interp area, Santa Cruz County, California, USA
May 14, 2011
Of course these two darkened depressions on the front leg section, are different then any other Podabrini I can find.

Looking in the hole after this had left, it couldn't have come out of there, it's posterior had to have completely filled the depression in the wood I found afterwards. Maybe it was laying eggs, but just by looking I couldn't see anything in the depression it had been in.

I do have a nice shot of the mandibles, if that would be of any use to the guide or for ID purposes.

A bit paler than what is described in Hatch, but the pronotal markings are distinctive for this species.
