American Dog Ticks (Dermacentor variabilis)? - Dermacentor variabilis - male - female

American Dog Ticks (Dermacentor variabilis)? - Dermacentor variabilis - Male Female
Turtle River State Park, Grand Forks County, North Dakota, USA
May 18, 2011
Size: Length ~ 4 mm
Jon, I returned to the woodshed and Turtle River State Park and found two of the three ticks (in the exact same location) I photographed earlier. These were collected, frozen, and then photographed (dorsal and ventral images) to see if it was possible, using the resolution on my camera, to discern the shape of the spiracular plate (which is the discerning characteristic to distinguish D. variabilis from D. andersoni). I'm appending these two images to my original photograph in the hope that it may be possible to determine the species. Thanks! ;-)
