Grasshopper - Melanoplus - male

Grasshopper - Melanoplus - Male
Chicago, Illinois, USA
May 10, 2006
Size: 7mm
I found this mini grasshopper in my yard with a bugnet. I'm not sure if it's a nymph or a pygmy species. Ignore the sand a dumped him in a jar to photograph and didn't realize the jar was sandy at the bottom..
Images to follow, close up of rear for ID help, cool tan eyes, and a mite on it's back.

Moved from Melanoplus.

Melanoplus species
A very young nymph. I can't tell the species. Did you take any shots from the side? It might help to identify it to species.

Too young.
This nymph is too young to be able to tell its identity beyond the family Acrididae. I suppose an expert might be able to place it to subfamily....
