Filter Fly or Moth Fly (I think?) - Clogmia albipunctata

Filter Fly or Moth Fly (I think?) - Clogmia albipunctata
Toronto, Toronto, Ontario, Canada
May 18, 2011
Size: 4mm
Found in medical office building, second floor. We have large windows but they do not open/close. There is no known outside access. We have a few houseplants near the windows. These flies are constantly found at the window. They are very sluggish and slow, and can be picked up by hand and fingers (they do not seem smart enough to fly away). Often I find them dead, drying up on the window ledge, and some live ones. After cleaning them up, and catching the live ones, they keep coming back. Are they in the plants? Are they in the drop-ceiling or ducts from the building? What is the source of this never-ending fly infestation?

They're also called "drain flies." Their larvae live in the organic sludge that coats the inner surfaces of drain pipes. That's where they're coming from.
