ball-shaped gall on oak - Dryocosmus quercuspalustris
New Providence, Union County, New Jersey, USA May 17, 2011 Size: 15 mm?
Seems to be a leaf gall, growing from the midvein near the petiole. On a red/black oak of some kind.
I think it's the same type as these:
on the same tree, at least.
