Dascillus sp. - Dascillus davidsoni

Dascillus sp. - Dascillus davidsoni
Mt Diablo State Park, Contra Costa County, California, USA
April 30, 2006
Size: 12mm
Dascillidae: Dascillus sp.
Dascillus plumbeus is the most common Dascillidae that looks like this from my area. However, a similar looking Dascillus davidsoni might also occur here. (Both occur in California.)

Found on grass in a field.

Hi Joyce -
I looked at an identified specimen of D. plumbeus this morning, also read Horn's key & description of the two species.
Because of the gayish pubescence, and irregular darker transverse bands on the elytra, also the third antennal joint not being longer than the fourth, I'd say this is unambiguously D. davidsoni LeConte.
Though the type specimen at MCZ is rather worn, the darker transverse bands can still be seen on the elytra.

i had the same feeling about the type specimen...
...and about this being D. davidsoni -- nice to know...

I just noticed my spelling error above -
The second sentence (not a Freudian slip) should read, "Because of the grayish pubescence...".
As I have time I'll check on more specimens of both spp. at LACNHM & will get to Ken Schneider's post as well.

i noticed it too, immediately :))
stating it's non-Freudian doesn't help much, btw

Usually Ron is in the funnies dept. -
good to be able to laugh!

thanks
for nailing this one down Hartmut (and thanks for the laugh H and V)

any idea what the common name
any idea what the common name for this is? I need to include this insect's common name in a school project.

The family has a common name.
Family Dascillidae = Soft-bodied Plant Beetles.

Congratulations, Joyce,
on adding a new family to bugguide. I created a guide page and moved your images.

thanks Jim!
for making the new guide page & moving the images.
