beetle - Hylecoetus lugubris - Male
Antrim, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, USA
May 24, 2011
Size: 8mm to elytra tip
What's up with the mustache below the antennae? I found 8 of these beetles running and flying around on the trunk of a white paper birch tree that had no injuries but was leaning.

GREAT find
Moved from Beetles.

We only had one adult image. Males have flabellate palps. Only one species known from U.S. of this genus. American Beetles says "Occurs commonly in fairly fresh Populus logs."

I went back and double checked the tree
It was a white (paper) birch about 6 inches in diameter that was leaning, but very much alive. And these beetles were definitely attracted to this tree. So maybe birch is used as well as poplar.

Ship timber beetle
Thanks Brad. This one species must be really quite variable.

very nice, folks...
i passed out early last night and missed all the action... all the clerical fun left to me is checking the maleboxes ))
E. flabellicornis is pretty common where i grew up
