Donna dug up this caterpillar in the garden. Resembles this Ctenucha virginica:

I agree
it fits Wagner's(1) image and description - "Tussocked with row of black middorsal abdominal tufts; first and last tufts longer than those of intervening segments. Flanking white, blond or yellow setal tufts may obscure black middorsal tufts. Beneath tufts, body nearly black with broken, cream subdorsal and white subspiracular stripes." This would apparently be a middle instar, as the black tufts are so obvious.
