Darkling Beetle - Polopinus youngi

Darkling Beetle - Polopinus youngi
Jupiter Ridge Natural Area, Florida, USA
June 30, 2004
I encountered these large beetles on almost every hike through this area, so they were quite common this time of year.

I had no idea what they were until I saw a similar image at A Gallery of Florida Insects.

Moved tentatively based on locality
Moved from Polopinus.

Polopinus sp.
All four N.A. species of Polopinus can be found in Florida. However, according to this list of Florida Coleoptera, only 3 are endemic, with P. youngi being recorded in Palm Beach county.
