Our hemipterist tells me that these are now considered merely a color form of Z. longipes.

Zelus?
Well, this specimen approaches a species of Zelus, but unless it is a morph of the orange and black species, this is not one I'm familiar with. Update: for the time being I am assigning this to Z. longipes. As with most species of Zelus, they are highly variable in coloration:-)

this is
an asassin bug in the family Reduviidae. Almost all asassins (except the genus Triatoma, which feeds on blood) are predators of other insects, hence the name asassin. Their mouths, also called beaks, pierce the exoskeleton, skin, of the prey and it sucks all the juices out. i wouldnt be able to tell you the genus though, maybe Zelus?

thanks I am a former bird photographer turning my lens on insects, it's a learning process. Don't quite know how to use the site to identify on my own.

So it's not just me.
I used the site about a month before someone told me to check out the Help section. So Paul, maybe I just shortened your learning curve. Check the Guide tab there. You might also want to skim through the Forums to see what else is available. Good hunting!
