Balaustium mites - Balaustium

Balaustium mites - Balaustium
Slaterville, Tompkins County, New York, USA
May 25, 2011
These scarlet mites were teeming-- teeming! I say-- on stone walls near me in upstate New York. To slow them down, I offered them a lily anther, and here you see them eating pollen. I believe they are a Balaustium species, based on how hard they are trying to be red, on the funny "vaccination scar" above the second pair of legs, and on their crazy swarminess. I posted a video and a few other shots to my flickr account, in case you are curious about the density and insanity of the swarming.
