Machimus callidus; excellent work Jim -- a new addition to BugGuide. I believe you are correct about the earlier female, which I will now ID M. callidus also.

I think this might be the male version of this female robber fly:


This male was caught about about two weeks later than the female. Again, thank you for any further ID Help!
