Bombylius sp. - Bombylius - female

Bombylius sp. - Bombylius - Female
Dry Creek drainage, near Lockwood Valley Road., Ventura County, California, USA
May 5, 2006
Size: ~ 7 mm
Nectaring in Phacelia douglasii. I also observed this little greenish bee fly in a couple of other locations, same day, in Wagon Road Canyon.
ID by Neal Evenhuis (Bishop Museum, Honolulu, HI).

ID?
This might be the small Triploechus sackenii, a very common, rather drab little So Cal fly.

Ah, this would explain
the notch in the middle of the eye's postmargin. Common or not, its still a new genus for me to learn. Thanks, Andy! If I catch some holding still long enough next spring, I'll see whether it has the three submarginal cells described in Hull (1).
