Eastern subterranean termites - Reticulitermes flavipes

Eastern subterranean termites - Reticulitermes flavipes
Canton, Norfolk County, Massachusetts, USA
May 26, 2011

I have a great video of some termite swarmers.

Ready to swarm
When they decide to swarm, all of the alates from the colony pour out and take to the air over the span of a couple of hours, often at dusk, after a rain, ideally near a full moon. It is really neat to watch. These alates look as though they are headed back under ground due to a disturbance, but soon they will be ready to take to the air.

That must be quite a sight
These were under a piece of plywood I lifted, and were heading for cover once I exposed them.
