Syrphid fly laying eggs - Syrphus opinator - female

Syrphid fly laying eggs - Syrphus opinator - Female
Elkton, Douglas County, Oregon, USA
May 24, 2011
Not sure what kind of syrphid this is. I tried getting a dorsal shot, but my moving around scared it away. I did, however, manage several shots of the fly depositing eggs. I didn't collect the eggs, because I don't know how to raise them. It appears to be a communal egg repository. Host plant Himalayan blackberries - interesting, how the eggs look like little blackberry thorns.

Thanks Ron, I read in the info they eat aphids. I'd like to raise a few, if I can find them again next year.

:-P)

Eupeodes
Note margined abdomen. Interesting series; too bad subject wasn't more inclined to posing.
