Fly with prey - Metadioctria parvula

Fly with prey - Metadioctria parvula
Lytle Ranch Preserve, Washington County, Utah, USA
May 26, 2011
Size: 8 to 10 mm
I thought this little thing looked like a miniature robber fly. I have no idea what it is but it is sucking the life out of some minuscule insect.

Nice find Carol!
Metadioctria sp., possibly M. resplendens (the mystax looks like it might be "red"). This is a new genus record for Utah!

I must make a correction: Met
I must make a correction: Metadioctria parvula was recorded from Logan Canyon, Utah on August 11, 1936 - as Dioctria parvula (see Knowlton & Harmston 1938). So this is not a new state record for the genus, but a very interesting find nonetheless!

Thanks, Chris
I looked at the two other photos I have of this and you can't tell what color the mystax is. Sorry. I'm glad you narrowed it to Metadioctria. It was cute little thing.

That's interesting....
I didn't even know Robber Flies came in small sizes. Thanks, "v".
