Thistle Guest - Paracantha culta

Thistle Guest - Paracantha culta
Desoto, Dallas County, Texas, USA
May 25, 2011
Is it safe to assume that the Paracantha flies that I find on thistles in my neighborhood field each spring will be P. cultis?

See also P. gentilis
You also have Paracantha gentilis on thistle in your area. P. culta can be distinguished by the large black spots along the inner edge of the eye near the antenna base, as seen here. Those spots are smaller and round in P. gentilis.(1)

Thanks for that information...
sorry about my Latin endings! I'll move this image with this information to the Guide page.

Imagine that!
Can't even tell the difference between basic 1st/2nd- and 3rd-declension adjectives- what has the world come to? Zounds! Egad! Harrrumph!!!

;-)
