My size guessing is bad. I'd say about 2 mm,it is on top of a redwood post about 36" above the ground.

This one...
bears some resemblance to the egg shown here. Should be made of excrement rather than sand, though, if it's a cryptocephaline egg.

I have had some case bearing beetles in this area.
About thanksgiving I'll have a year checking out the fauna on these posts, though only 1-3 times a month.
