brochosome smearing
Leafhoppers exude digested sap along with tiny waxy plates (that look like doilies under a microscope) called brochosomes; these they smear all over the wings with the fine brushlike hairs on the inner sides of the hind tibiae to create a water-repellent surface. Often droplets are placed on the outer edges of the wings where they dry, leaving white patches.
