Western Avocado Leafroller - Amorbia cuneanum - Female
Webb Canyon, ~2000 ft. elevation, Los Angeles County, California, USA
April 20, 2011
I photographed this moth resting in a patch of thistle (Silybum marianum, I believe). I shared these images with Chris Mallory and he was able to provide me with an ID. He photographed a similar looking specimen, which is identified here. I was curious as to why he though this was a female and he provided the following useful info:
I'm assuming female because MWNA states "males are pale tan with typical rust pattern through shades of rust, to dark gray brown....Females are consistently rust orange to dark rust brown." There are 5 plates in the book (3 males and 2 females) showing the range of pattern/color variation and yours is a perfect match to plate 19.22, a female.

If anyone feels that this ID is incorrect, Chris and I would both welcome any corrections. :-)
