I'm curious David
that appears to be a lowgrowing evergreen maybe a juniper they are on, do you suppose thats the foodplant?

 
Looks like a Juniper
Probably Juniperus horizontalis. On first thought it would seem unlikely as a food plant, but it's an interesting idea - could be.

Then again it may have just been the highest perch around?

from everything i know
the female doesnt fly untill mated. i just dont see anything else around. wish i could just take off and investigate these sort of things.
