caterpillar - May 26 - Loscopia velata

caterpillar - May 26 - Loscopia velata
Cross Plains, Dane County, Wisconsin, USA
May 26, 2011
This is a very common caterpillar (eats grass) in one of its stages. Curious to see if it is identifiable. It has now pupated and so I'm waiting to see what moth will emerge (I'm assuming it's a moth). I'll post more photos once it has emerged.

Excellent !
Do you think we should be moving all the grass and sedge eating caterpillars from Morrisonia to Amphipoea? That would seem reasonable to us. Morrisonia should be found on woody plants.

moving caterpillars
Seems reasonable to me, too.

Moved from Fluid Arches.

Similar caterpillars have been gathered under Morrisonia latex
but we don't know how many have been confirmed yet. In the guide here

I think that this caterpillar is Amphipoea velata - Veiled Ear Moth based on the moth that emerged. Came across the photos when I was looking for something else and the moths matched the ones which resulted from these caterpillars.

another photo of caterpillar
I just added a photo of the caterpillar as it appeared on May 20. There seems to be quite a variation in the caterpillars shown for this moth. Also had a very interesting experience with one of these cats and an ichneumon wasp this afternoon. I'll eventually get the photos posted.

Have to admit I'm starting to feel a bit overwhelmed with all the caterpillars I'm currently raising! I hope some of them pupate soon.
