The Athous ID never sat well with me, and now that I have a second specimen, I am confident with this ID. The hind pronotal angles do not extend much past the hypomeron (especially in dorsal view), so it can key as an Athous!

After examining under scope at work, this is a cucullatus; just a plumper, darker female.

This is a tentative ID; would like to confirm. The color and shape of scutellum are c/w this species. The pronotal punctures are more simple than umbillicate (the punctures on the hypomeron are distinctly umbillicate). There is also a prominant carina on the pronotal hind angles.
Becker in his 1974 revision of the genus has this species going as far south as Ohio. South Carolina may seem a bit of a stretch, but that publication is 37 years old now, too. In his revision, Becker examined 89 specimens, 80% of which were male and this specimen appears to be female.
