Size: ~13mm
This sparkly green beetle was apparently doing some biological pest control on my wife's shirt. She was a little alarmed, but I told her that it's better than being sprayed with insecticides!

i think it's safe: chalcites is the only one in LA...

looks like P. chalcites, but I don't know what other species you may have down there
