Eye-spotted Lady Beetle - Anatis mali

Eye-spotted Lady Beetle - Anatis mali
Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, USA
June 10, 2011
Size: large for ladybugs
I'd never seen a ladybug this big before, or one with eyes.

nice find!
And a really nice example, too. These can be up to 10mm long - they're one of the largest lady beetles in North America.

thanks
At first I didn't even recognize it as a lady beetle, I thought it was some leaf beetle.

Are these native?

yes, native species
The genus is holarctic, though, and there's an almost-identical species in Europe called the Eyed Lady Beetle (or Ladybird, I guess). The whole genus is full of large (up to 1/2 inch) and strikingly-patterned or colored beetles, they're stunners!
