Philanthus multimaculatus? - Philanthus multimaculatus - male

Philanthus multimaculatus? - Philanthus multimaculatus - Male
Claremont, Los Angeles County, California, USA
June 12, 2011
This wasp was observed at about 3:00 pm on California Buckwheat (Eriogonum fasciculatum) at the Claremont Colleges' Robert J. Bernard Biological Field Station. I am wondering if it might be Philanthus multimaculatus, which has been reported (but not previously photographed) at the field station. It looks similar to the BugGuide images, but I'm don't know what characters are important for identification. Any information will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks, Hartmut! I'm glad that we now have photographic documentation of this species. I think it's very cool!
