This is the intergrade between the white admiral and the red spotted purple. These butterflies congregate at muddy spots and on animal droppings, sometimes in large numbers. In collections of a dozen or more, I will almost always see one or more of these hybrids. Curiously, I have yet to see a red spotted purple.
