stag beetle - Platycerus quercus - female

stag beetle - Platycerus quercus - Female
Hudson, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, USA
May 18, 2006
Size: about 12 mm
This appears to be a female Platycerus virescens. This is the second member of this species I've found. The first was a male that was dark with a faint greenish tint. I'm guessing there's a color difference between sexes, borne out by the images on bugguide.

This one was under bark on a deciduous log about 10" in diameter.
