These are such bizarre and neat critters!

I'm just browsing all your photos....this one is AMAZING!

Ambush Bug, the Jagged kind
I agree--very bizarre and neat looking insect! I came across one that isn't jagged (although I wish I had) and uploaded a shot of it. Did you find your example to be very lethargic, enough so that you could take a number of good close-up photographs? Btw, what kind of camera/lens did you use?

Phymata sp.
Hey Gary,

I saw your pics as well (nice shots!), looks to be the same species. I *think* the Phymata genus are the Jagged Ambush bugs, but I could be wrong...

Yes, they are very docile little insects and will sit very still to get their portrait taken:)

I use a Canon Rebel with a 100mm Macro lens...and a lot of patience...

Happy buggin!

What's the phymata wit ya?
Hey Tony,

Thanks - I took them rather impromptu with my Canon G3. I didn't have a tripod handy, unfortunately. I just acquired a 2x lens, so hopefully this will increase my magnification in macro mode. Although, it seems I'm eventually gonna have to go SLR to take better closeups.

You got some great shots of the Jagged Ambush Bugs, especially the one of them mating. What timing! :-)

~Gary
