This guy was moving his abdomen around. I don't know whether he was trying to attract bugs or a mate, or something else. The end segments of his abdomen aren't visible in this shot because he was moving it around below him at the time.

This is an adult of the owlfly Ululodes macleayanus (Guilding, 1825).

Hi Andrew,

Your creature there is an Owlfly, family Ascalaphidae. Might be genus Ululodes. Strange little beasts distantly related to lacewings and ant-lions. Not much else has such ridiculous antennae...
